We’re in the peak of hurricane season, which means homes are at risk of storm damage. We spoke with the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety about tips to strengthen your home. It can start on the roof with spending about $50 on the right nails.
Who is the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety?
The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) tests products in storm-like conditions, then lists the best at www.fortifiedhome.org.
How can I strengthen my roof?
Make sure the roof decking—which is what shingles or a metal roof sit on—is attached to the trusses or the rafters with ring shank nails. Ring shank nails have ridges or grooves on them. Spending $50 on these nails can double the strength of your roof.
How can I protect my roof from water?
Seal the roof deck to keep wind and water out of the roof cover. That will keep water out of the house and from causing even more damage.
Do I need to get the most expensive roof covering products?
No, purchase roof covering products designed to resist the conditions you face in your area. You don’t always have to spend more money.
Do I need to worry about my garage door?
Yes, make sure your garage door is properly rated. If it fails in a storm, the pressure change inside your house could cause major damage.
How do I know what shingles protect my roof from hail damage?
IBHS tested and rated impact resistant shingles. You can see how they rated. And not all of the best performing were the most expensive.
Can I get an insurance discount for using weather resistance materials? Some insurance companies offer a discount, so be sure to ask your agent what’s available.
